Definition at a glance
The approval period is the timeframe for which housing benefit is bindingly determined and paid. Usually, this period is 12 months.
The Standard Approval Period
Generally, housing benefit is approved for a period of 12 months. This serves administrative simplification and provides the household with planning security. The period always begins on the first of the month in which the application was submitted.
Shortening and Extension
In justified cases, the Duisburg housing benefit authority can deviate from the 12-month rule. A shortening often occurs in case of foreseeable changes (moving, end of studies). An extension up to 24 months is possible if income is expected to remain stable (e.g., for pensioners).
Continued Payment and Deadlines
After the approval period expires, the payment ends automatically. To ensure no gap in support, a follow-up application must be submitted in time (recommended: 2 months before expiry).
Legal Basis
The duration of the approval period is legally defined in Section 25 WoGG (Approval Period).
