Wohngeld Reform 2025/2026
The Wohngeld reform brought comprehensive changes for Wohngeld recipients and applicants. Here you will find all important updates – explained clearly and understandably.
The Wohngeld-Plus Act
The Wohngeld-Plus Act, which came into force at the beginning of 2023, implemented the largest Wohngeld reform in decades. The number of Wohngeld households has tripled as a result. The reform brought higher Wohngeld amounts and a permanent heating cost component.
Changes from 2025
Wohngeld was adjusted again on 1 January 2025. The Wohngeld amounts were increased to compensate for rising rental and heating costs. The income limits were raised so that more households are eligible for Wohngeld. The heating cost component was integrated into Wohngeld as a permanent element.
Outlook for 2026
The federal government is planning further adjustments for 2026. The indexation of Wohngeld – i.e. the automatic adjustment to rent and income trends – is to take place annually in future. This ensures that Wohngeld keeps pace with inflation.
What the reform means for you
As a result of the reform, you can expect higher Wohngeld than before 2025. Even if you were not previously eligible, it is worth checking again. Many households that were previously just above the income limit are now eligible for Wohngeld due to the increase.
Transitional arrangements
For ongoing Wohngeld approvals, the new rules apply from the date of the reform. Retroactive adjustment for approval periods that have already expired is not possible. Submit your application in good time to benefit from the changes.
