How Wohngeld is calculated

Wohngeld is calculated using the formula: Wohngeld = 1.15 × (M – (a + b × M + c × Y) × Y). Here M stands for the eligible rent, Y for total income and a, b, c are parameters that depend on household size and Mietstufe. Don't worry – you don't need to apply this formula yourself. Our Wohngeld calculator does it for you.

Example calculation 1: Single-person household

Ms Müller lives alone in Duisburg (Mietstufe IV). Her cold rent is 400 euros, her monthly gross income is 1,100 euros. After deducting income-related expenses, social security contributions and taxes, the adjusted income is approximately 850 euros. With these figures, Ms Müller could expect a Wohngeld of around 190 euros per month.

Example calculation 2: Family with two children

The Yilmaz family lives with two children in Duisburg (Mietstufe IV). Their cold rent is 700 euros and their combined gross income is 2,800 euros. Mr and Mrs Schmidt both receive a pension and live in Duisburg. Their cold rent is 500 euros and their monthly pension income is 1,500 euros net. With these figures, the couple could expect a Wohngeld of around 180 euros per month.
