Wohngeld Reform 2025/2026 – What Has Changed
The 2025 Wohngeld reform brought the biggest changes in years: Wohngeld amounts were increased by an average of 15 per cent, income limits were raised and the heating cost component was permanently integrated. A further adjustment to income and rent trends is planned for 2026 – the so-called indexation is to take place automatically every two years in future. For Duisburg with Mietstufe IV, this means noticeably higher Wohngeld amounts for eligible households.

Increase in Wohngeld Amounts 2026
Wohngeld amounts were adjusted again on 1 January 2026. A single-person household in Duisburg with a cold rent of 400 euros and an adjusted income of 900 euros can now expect around 200 to 250 euros in Wohngeld per month – approximately 30 euros more than before the reform. Families with two children benefit disproportionately: with a cold rent of 750 euros and an adjusted income of 2,200 euros, up to 380 euros in Wohngeld is now possible. The exact amounts depend on your individual data – use our Wohngeld calculator for a personal estimate.

Indexation – Automatic Adjustment for Inflation
An important component of the reform is indexation: in future, Wohngeld is to be automatically adjusted to income and rent trends every two years. This prevents Wohngeld from losing value due to inflation – a problem that regularly occurred before the reform. The next scheduled adjustment is planned for 2028. Until then, the federal government will review annually whether unscheduled adjustments are necessary.

Wohngeld in Duisburg – Local Developments
Duisburg continues to invest in social housing. New residential neighbourhoods in Meiderich, Rheinhausen and Duisburg-Mitte are creating additional housing. Rents in Duisburg are rising moderately but remain below the NRW average. Thanks to Mietstufe IV, the Wohngeld maximum amounts remain attractive for Duisburg households. The Wohngeld Office Duisburg has reduced its processing times through digital processes – applications submitted online in particular are processed more quickly.

Outlook – What Comes After 2026?
The federal government plans to further develop Wohngeld. Under discussion: an expansion of the eligible group of people, greater consideration of heating costs and a simplification of the application process. Relevant for Duisburg: the Mietstufen classification is reviewed regularly – if the rent level in Duisburg continues to rise, an upgrade to Mietstufe V could take place, which would mean higher Wohngeld maximum amounts.
